Perceptions of "dating" changes in South Africa
31 May 2011
The last few weeks and months have been a time of great reflection for me. In years gone by I’ve enjoyed writing the newsletters about dating in SA, what to do, what not to do, where to go, where not to go etc. Getting feedback and input from those was just brilliant and even cause in some cases for further writing. However, in recent months I find myself speechless! I find that people know a lot about what I’d talk about anyway, and that’s just great.

Six years ago the speed dating concept was new. Dating was “new” in South Africa. Of course that sounds like I’ve gone mad, but what I mean is that people didn’t talk about “dating” and how to “date”, it was a secretive concept. “Don’t tell anyone you’re single” type environment, and get hooked up as fast as you could possibly manage. Admittedly, this still prevails in some cultures, but thankfully, being single and dating is far more out there than it was, and the trend moves itself along.

So I am speechless, but entirely pleased, with how things have moved along, to the point where I find I don’t need to preach the values of being single, most people get it!

These, as always, are my thoughts. Would you agree? What was it like being single 5 years ago versus now. If you were single 5 years and are now. Are you okay with that? Are your friends okay with that or do they still try and hook you up any chance they get? Has anything changed from your perspective in the last 5 / 10 / 20 years with regards your approach to dating or societies view on dating?
